Our idea is to implement a Civic Engagement Wall. One of our main concerns is the lack of civically engaged individuals in South Florida. We believe this is due to the fact that most of South Florida residents are immigrants. Perhaps, since we come from different countries, we believe our opinions and ideas hold no weight because we do not consider ourselves true Americans. Our Civic Engagement Wall will not only encourage members of our community to voice their ideas, we will provide them with enough moral support to transform these ideas into a reality. This ‘wall’ will be a melting pot of each of our concerns, problems, and solutions. This in turn will empower each and every single one of us to work together in order to improve the community we live in.
Miami Dade College has over 174,000 students. We will begin by implementing the Civic Engagement Wall at one of our 8 campuses. The ‘Wall’ will be posted in one of the most highly trafficked areas of the campus. It is here where students will write their topics of discussion. At the end of each week the topics will be uploaded to our website and be subject to online voting. In addition, for those members of our community who do not attend Miami Dade College, they will be able to access this ‘wall’ online and will have the opportunity to submit ideas/topics of discussion through our website. Each week the top two discussion topics will be selected for a biweekly discussion forum. This forum will take place at Miami Dade College.
