Strong Minds of Leaders organizing campaign is focused on structuring the leadership and knowledge of 15-30 foster care students of 11th and 12th grade in high school during a 6 month course in the Fall of 2012. This extensive period is centered to achieve leadership skills such as public speaking, developing a mentoring relationship, and specific skills for college success. All features of our leadership training will be focused on empowering Miami Dade students as well as Foster care students for college completion and college success. The barrier of my project addresses is the issue of college entrance and completion. At the age of 18, foster care students are removed from system and are left without any support or resources to succeed to a higher education. We seek to partner with Miami Dade College and Empower a Student not because it is our primary foundation, but because they share a common interest: increasing completion of higher education through peer-to-peer engagement.
To begin with, we would need to make flyers and postings for the incoming freshmen of Miami Dade College to join and participate. In addition, as an American Dream Scholar, we are potential leaders and therefore, many can recruit the incoming American Dream Scholars for this program. As member of the 305 Rise inspired by the Harvard Latino Initiative, we have graduates from Miami Dade who excelled their studies in Harvard. This will be a great opportunity to have support from them, gain knowledge on the process of their campaign, and recruit speakers. Our partner in this project, Empower a Student, has a Empower a Student, has a list of other organizations that can recruit foster care students near the Wolfson Campus.
